Australia's captain Poised for a Key Part in the Ashes

Pat Cummins bowling

The pace bowler has claimed 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

Australia's selection chief Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Initial reports from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches set to start on 21 November in Perth.

Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the prospects of participating.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and various factors around that, not just the physical problem, but further aspects," the selector added.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a major part. With luck starting in Perth. If not, we'll reassess."

Injury History

The captain missed the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India last month after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the series.

Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the national team for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and confirmed that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the opening match as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games in any case. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
